IB graduate profile - Marcie Nolan
Graduated from Brent International School, The Philippines, in 2000.
"My name is Margaret Nastasha Nolan, although I'm known as Marcie to most of my friends, and I graduated IB from Brent International School, Manila (Mamplasan Campus) in the Philippines in 2000. During that time, I was involved in many different activities from sports, choir, charities, and the Student Council as President. Now in 2003, I am in my final year at the University of Plymouth, United Kingdom, pursuing a multimedia computing Bachelor of Science (Honours).
Since leaving IB, the skills and knowledge I retained have helped me in many different aspects of my studies and life. It has brought me very far and looking back, all the work has been worth it. Upon entering university in 2000 I started studying media lab arts, which integrates creative arts practice and cutting-edge digital technologies within a cultural context. Through multimedia and interactive production, deep programming skills, and a critical perspective it explores diverse publishing platforms (web, DTV, CD, DVD, PDA, mobile phone) to create a new kind of media designer. After two years I transferred to multimedia computing, which gave me the knowledge and skills to get involved in this rapid and exciting convergence of technologies in the digital area and allowed me to choose modules in areas I wished to specialize in. It is hard work but very interesting since it covers aspects of new media technology and its implications in the industry today as well as allowed me to view this industry in a business perspective.
IB also enabled me to study in the UK, which led to many exciting experiences. I have met friends from all over the world and have been involved in a lot of activities through them. I tried out for school plays, went to Christian student meetings, worked in nightclubs, and traveled around England. I also had the opportunity to travel to Bordeaux, France, for two weeks with a French exchange student who lived with me in our halls of residence and we have been good friends ever since. Through them I enjoyed the cultures and styles of many cities and developed a very global approach to thinking. I am now applying for a Master's degree in business management and I am planning to focus on e-commerce and international business. I hope that when I graduate in 2004, I will find a position in or even manage my own new media company that will some day become a multinational corporation."
