IB community theme

The IB community now includes more than 2,376 schools, 643,000 students, teachers, parents, staff, examiners and other colleagues in more than 128 countries. In an effort to strengthen this large and growing community and the IB mission, which we share, the International Baccalaureate® has initiated an exciting new project—the IB community theme.

Asian child with puzzleThe idea of a community theme was conceived in 2006 and the first theme, sharing our humanity, was officially launched in April 2007 at the annual general meeting.

The IB community theme website is the central communication and discussion forum for the theme sharing our humanity. It is open to all members of the IB community including students and parents.

The theme, which will last three years, is intended to serve as a focus for the IB and for IB World Schools. We aim to capture the excellent initiatives that are already underway in many schools and encourage and inspire new activities, in and out of the classroom, around the following topics.

  • Global poverty
  • Education for all
  • Peace and conflict
  • Global infectious diseases
  • Digital divide: uneven access to information and communication technologies
  • Disasters and emergencies

(High Noon by JF Rischard, 2002)

Over the next six months more information and ideas will be delivered to schools about this theme.

We will be encouraging and facilitating schools to integrate activities around this theme into school life … and to share results, successes and stories with the global IB community.

The IB Organization will do the same, for example through conference themes, articles in IB World and in the online curriculum centre (OCC).  Our aim is to focus and direct our collective efforts in a way that unites our work and builds connections across the IB community.

Addressing the IB community theme in the curriculum

A series of documents have been created to help teachers integrate the project into their curriculums.

"The project has given me and my classmates a sense of community, and the IB's focus on helping a student be a well-rounded individual has given me self-confidence."

Jenna Gaylene Tichon, student at Westwood Collegiate, Winnipeg, Manitoba
