Quarter Two, 2008

Japan and Korea

Congratulations

Dr Thomas Penland, Head of Taejon Christian International

School, South Korea received an authorization letter dated 24

April to offer the PYP. This is the second authorization letter that

Dr Thomas Penland has received as he, together with Ken

Gunther, DP Coordinator led Taejon Christian International

School to Diploma authorization in 2004.

Mr Robert Risch, Head of Nagoya International School, Japan

received an authorization letter dated 13 May 2008 to offer the

Diploma Programme.

PYP East Asia Network Meeting

Mr Clarence Combs, Chair of the PYP Network Group and PYP

Coordinator at Osaka International School, organized and

hosted our Spring PYP East Asia Network meeting on 4 April.

The group shown in a photograph below discussed such agenda

items as hosting of workshops, sharing resources and ideas,

single subject teachers, language programs in PYP, portfolios,

and action at schools. 

As a result, on 24 April Toni Bell, PYP Coordinator at Yokohama

International School, together with the Japanese language team

organized and hosted a PYP sharing session for Japanese

teachers. 16 teachers who came from six schools attended the

session and shared their practices.

Likewise, Kelli Holm, PYP Coordinator at Tokyo International

School, together with the P.E. team, will host a sharing meeting

for P.E. teachers on Monday 27 October.

Hiroshima International School will host our Fall PYP Network

meeting on Monday 6 October. Mario Gauci, IB Asia Pacific PYP

Associate Regional Manager, will be attending this meeting.

MYP East Asia Network Meeting

Mr Gwyn Underwood, Chair of the MYP East Asia Network group,

organized the spring meeting and it was hosted by Mr Darryl

Mann at Katoh Gakuen on 25 April 2008. The meeting was

attended by coordinators from seven schools.  The meeting

covered such areas as the accessing issues of MYP materials,

bilingual in-school trainers, standardization exercise, academic

honesty and a presentation on “Creating Student-centered

Assessment” given by Caroline Rennie, MYP Coordinator at

Osaka International School.

The fall meeting is scheduled to be held either on 30 October or

3 November at K. International School Tokyo.

Diploma Coordinators’ Meeting

Mr Peter Heimer, Chair of the DP Coordinators Meeting/ Osaka

International School, is organizing the May DP Coordinators’

meeting which Mr James Hatch, DP Coordinator at Fukuoka

International School FIS is hosting on 27 May.  In addition to the

two DP coordinators meetings a year, DP coordinators are

actively involved in the sharing of the know-how and expertise

throughout the year.
