Glossary

Accept – applicant has satisfied any conditions specified by institution and made commitment to take up the place

Age – age of applicant (in years) at the end of the September before entry to higher education. Presented in 11 categories (data may not reflect this given the age of applicants applying to HE).

Conditional Offer – an offer given to an applicant on the basis of the results of a qualification pending

Disability Applicants are asked to declare any disability on the UCAS application. Provision of this information is voluntary and applicants are advised that they may choose to inform directly the HEIs to which they apply.

Ethnic Group – applicants are asked to record their ethnic origin on the UCAS application. Provision of this information is voluntary and it is not passed to HEIs until after the selection process. Ethnicity is summarised into broad groupings and is only available for those for whom the UK is the area of permanent residence and therefore a high proportion of unknowns appear within this analysis.

EU – European Union

Fee Status – applicants are classified as having “home” or “overseas” fee status dependent on their nationality and where they have been resident in the previous three years. Those with “home” fee status, including EU nationals, would be able to apply to be assessed for student support. Those with “overseas” fee status would be charged full fees by the institution concerned.

School Type applicant's previous school or college type, derived from the National Schools Register.  If an applicant has not applied directly from a school or college, the school type is unknown.  The unknown group also includes some applicants from miscellaneous agencies, such as careers offices.  Educational background data are available only for those for whom the UK is their area of permanent residence and therefore a high proportion of unknowns appear within this analysis.

Socio-economic status data are only available for those for whom the UK is their area of permanent residence and therefore a high proportion of unknowns appear within this analysis.

Unsuccessful - applications that were rejected and also applications that did not receive a decision (eg if the application to the institution concerned was cancelled)
