Institution types
Due to confidentiality constraints, UCAS is unable to provide data at institutional level. However HEIs have been grouped to examine whether there were differences in the treatment of IB applicants between these groups. The institutional type groupings were supplied by IB (Appendix B).
Table 3.1 shows the number of applications made by IB applicants to each institution type and Chart 3.1 shows the proportion of all applications by institution type.

50.9% of applications from IB students were made to Pre-92 University/Russell Group institutions. There was also a large proportion of applications to Pre-92 University institutions (8,275 applications: 31.8% of total applications) with HEI Other and FE Colleges receiving smaller numbers of applications (153 applications: 0.6% of total applications and 194 applications: 0.7% of total applications respectively).

Whilst Pre-92 University/Russell Group institutions received the most applications across all IB applicants (50.9%), 59.0% of non EU IB applications were to Pre-92 University/Russell Group institutions compared to 47.0% for UK applicants and 46.1% for EU applicants.

From Table 3.5, of the 70.3% of IB applications receiving offers, 31.0% received offers from Pre-92 University/Russell Group institutions type. NB 50.9% of applications from IB students were made to this institution type (Table 2.2). 25.9% of IB applications received offers from Pre-92 Universities with only 5.9% applications unsuccessful at this institution type.

Considering Tables 3.6-3.8, whilst overall 70.3% of IB applications received offers, only 67.9% of EU applications received offers but 73.2% of non EU applications received offers.

Of all 4,599 IB applicants, 3,252 (70.7%) were accepted on to a HE course at a UK HEI. Pre-92/Russell Group institutions accounted for around half of the total accepted applicants (1,614: 49.6%). Pre-92 Universities accounted for almost a third of the total accepted applicants (1,063: 32.7%). Looking at the percentage of applications accepted, these ranged from 10.5% at HEI Other institutions to 14.4% at FE Colleges.

Considering Tables 3.10-3.12, 62.6% of Non EU IB accepted applicants were accepted by Pre-92 University/Russell Group compared to 43.2% for EU IB applicants and 44.4% of UK applicants. Looking at Pre-92 University acceptances, 25.0% of Non EU accepted applicants were accepted at Pre-92 Universities, 36.8% of EU accepted applicants and 35.7% of UK accepted applicants.
